25 February 2025 - Towards COP 30 in Brazil
Some 300 universities from Latin America, Italy, Portugal and Spain have been invited to participate in an innovative project with a focus on climate change, biodiversity, disinformation and new paradigms for sustainability. Within the framework of this initiative, students and teachers will begin to regularly produce related content, which would be broadcast through the 454 universities’ radio, television and digital media stations, as well as community radio and TV stations. In addition, the creation of diplomas and master's degrees in Environmental Communication is sought.
The initiative, promoted by the international program Citizens' Platform on Climate Change and a Sustainable World (Citiplat), in conjunction with the Arturo Jauretche National University (UNAJ) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, has the support of the UNESCO sectors for Communication and Information, and Natural Sciences, with Citiplat and UNAJ as executive agencies for the project.
The project gained momentum during the main UNESCO conference for World Press Freedom Day, held in Santiago, Chile on May 3, under the motto “A press for the planet: journalism in the face of the environmental crisis.”
Within this framework and over three days, Citiplat carried out the "Much Ado About Nothing" action, with the participation of the Chilean universities Diego Portales and Chile, the UNAJ, the Italian university IULM, fact-checkers from Latin America and around 150 local students.
The lack of regular information, the impact of disinformation about climate change, biodiversity and sustainable development, especially in the Global South, led to reinforcing the role of universities already committed to this issue, their existing media and, in particular, the active role that students can immediately play as producers of local content alongside academics and scientists.
UNESCO's experience and tools in media and information literacy and digital skills are valued, in order to ensure trust in the information ecosystem and digital technologies, including artificial intelligence.
The project was presented in September 2024 during the First Ibero-American Congress of Sustainable Universities, organized by UNAJ and the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. It will be considered in detail and worked collaboratively on February 25, 2025 at the International Symposium “Universities and New Paradigms for Sustainability: Role of Environmental Communication”, with the participation of representatives of UNESCO and Citiplat, and the support of the RIU - Red Internacional Universitaria and ARUNA - Association of Argentine National University Radio Broadcasters. One of the objectives is to immediately begin the production and coordinated dissemination of content and present this important initiative next November at COP 30, in Belem, Brazil.

Las Universidades Frente al Cambio Climático y los Nuevos Paradigmas para la Sostenibilidad

Unas 300 universidades de América Latina, Italia, Portugal y España han sido convocadas a participar en un proyecto innovador con un enfoque centrado en el cambio climático, la biodiversidad, la desinformación y los nuevos paradigmas para la sostenibilidad. En el marco de esta iniciativa, estudiantes y profesores comenzarán a producir regularmente contenidos relacionados, que serían difundidos a través de las 454 emisoras de radio, televisión y medios digitales universitarios, así como por radios y TVs comunitarias. Además, se busca la creación de diplomaturas y maestrías en Comunicación Ambiental.
La iniciativa, impulsada por el programa internacional Citizens’ Platform on Climate Change and a Sustainable World (Citiplat), en conjunto con la Universidad Nacional Arturo Jauretche (UNAJ) en Buenos Aires, Argentina, cuenta con el apoyo de los sectores de la UNESCO para la Comunicación y la Información, y Ciencias Naturales, con Citiplat y la UNAJ como ejecutores del proyecto.
El proyecto cobró impulso durante la principal conferencia de la UNESCO por el Día Mundial de la Libertad de Prensa, realizada en Santiago de Chile el pasado 3 de mayo, bajo el lema “Una prensa para el planeta: el periodismo ante la crisis ambiental”.
En ese marco, y a lo largo de tres días, Citiplat llevó a cabo la acción "Mucho ruido y pocas nueces", con la participación de las universidades chilenas Diego Portales y de Chile, la UNAJ, la universidad italiana IULM, verificadores de datos de América Latina y alrededor de 150 estudiantes locales.
La falta de información regular, el impacto de la desinformación y las noticias falsas sobre el cambio climático, la biodiversidad y el desarrollo sostenible, especialmente en el Sur Global, impulsaron a reforzar el papel de las universidades ya comprometidas con esta temática, sus medios de comunicación existentes y, en particular, el rol activo que los estudiantes pueden desempeñar de manera inmediata como productores de contenido de alcance local junto a académicos y científicos.
Se valora la experiencia y las herramientas de la UNESCO en alfabetización mediática e informacional y en competencias digitales, con el fin de garantizar la confianza en el ecosistema informativo y en las tecnologías digitales, incluida la inteligencia artificial.
El proyecto fue presentado en septiembre de 2024 durante el Primer Congreso Iberoamericano de Sostenibilidad Universitaria, organizado por la UNAJ y la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, España. Será considerado de modo detallado y trabajado colaborativamente el 25 de febrero de 2025 en el Simposio Internacional “Universidades y Nuevos Paradigmas para la Sostenibilidad: Rol de la Comunicación Ambiental”, con la participación de representantes de la UNESCO y Citiplat, y el apoyo de la RIU - Red Internacional Universitaria y ARUNA - Asociación de Radiodifusoras Universitarias Nacionales Argentinas. Uno de los objetivos es iniciar de inmediato la producción y difusión coordinada de contenidos y presentar esta trascendente iniciativa en noviembre próximo en la COP 30, en Belén, Brasil.
