The ingenious design of khettaras

The khettara, also known as qanat in Persia, represents a sophisticated water management technology developed over two millennia ago. This system comprises a network of gently sloping underground tunnels designed to intercept and transport groundwater through gravitational flow. Vertical shafts, strategically spaced along the tunnels, facilitate maintenance and ensure adequate ventilation. Crucially, these subterranean conduits were designed to minimize water loss from evaporation, a key adaptation for survival in hyper-arid climates.

At the height of their utility, thousands of khettaras sustained Morocco’s oases, supporting vital agricultural systems and settlements such as Tafilalt and Skoura. These hydraulic networks enabled the cultivation of date palms, a staple of oasis economies and fostered thriving communities in some of the most inhospitable terrains. 

However, the advent of modern pumping technologies and the subsequent abandonment of traditional maintenance practices led to the decline of many khettaras, exacerbating vulnerability to drought and water insecurity.


Contemporary water scarcity: a national crisis

Morocco’s water challenges have reached critical levels in recent decades. Erratic rainfall patterns driven by climate change, coupled with population growth and unsustainable agricultural practices, have placed immense pressure on the country’s water resources. The World Resources Institute ranks Morocco among nations experiencing extreme water stress, with severe implications for food security, urban water supply, and rural livelihoods.

In response to this escalating crisis, the Moroccan government and international organizations have prioritized the revitalization of traditional water systems like the khettaras. 

This strategy reflects a broader recognition of the value of integrating indigenous knowledge with modern technological innovations to address complex environmental challenges.


Revitalizing the khettara systems

Rehabilitation efforts in regions such as Tafilalt have focused on restoring the structural integrity and functionality of these ancient systems. Local communities, supported by governmental and international bodies, are spearheading initiatives to clear sediment-blocked tunnels, repair degraded structures, and enhance water flow efficiency. Modern technologies, such as solar-powered pumps, are being integrated into these systems to augment their capacity and ensure year-round reliability.

One exemplary initiative is the collaboration between Morocco’s Ministry of Water and UNESCO, which has documented and restored key khettara networks. In Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, restored khettaras now sustain agricultural production and tourism, simultaneously preserving cultural heritage and supporting local economies.



Sustainability through traditional knowledge

The revival of khettaras underscores the enduring relevance of traditional water management practices. Unlike mechanical pumps, khettaras extract groundwater at a sustainable rate, mitigating the risks of aquifer depletion and land subsidence. Their reliance on gravity eliminates the need for external energy inputs, rendering them inherently low-carbon and environmentally sound.

Moreover, the maintenance and operation of khettaras historically required collective action, fostering strong community bonds and shared responsibility for resource management. This aspect of social cohesion has been revitalized through recent rehabilitation efforts, empowering local populations to take ownership of their water resources while strengthening adaptive capacities in the face of climate change.


Addressing challenges and unlocking opportunities

Despite their potential, restoring khettaras poses significant challenges. The labor-intensive nature of rehabilitation, coupled with the substantial financial investments required, often deters large-scale implementation. Furthermore, convincing younger generations of the value of these systems in the context of modern technologies remains an ongoing effort.

Nevertheless, the opportunities presented by revitalized khettaras are substantial. As models of sustainable water management, they offer valuable lessons for other arid and semi-arid regions grappling with water scarcity. By blending indigenous knowledge with contemporary advancements, khettaras exemplify how traditional systems can be adapted to meet modern environmental and societal demands.
